The Alpha Lite Program
1. What is the Alpha Lite Program? The Alpha Lite Program is a pre-college program, which is designed to bring awareness of various aspects of life to African-American male high school students who are in their freshman, sophomore, junior or senior year. Workshops are also designed to include parents or guardians.
2. Where are the workshops held? Most workshops are held at Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Illinois in the Schiable Science Center Building. Elmhurst College is located at 190 Prospect Road in Elmhurst, Illinois. The college is located west of Chicago and can be reached by taking either the I-290 Extension (Eisenhower Expressway) west and exiting at St. Charles Road - West. Proceed west for approx. 1 & ½ mile to Prospect. Turn right and proceed north three blocks to the campus. The Science Center is located on the northwest corner of Elm and Prospect. Other Alternate expressways and streets may be used, when driving from other locations. The Chicago & North Western Railway [Metra - West Line] provides commuter rail service to Elmhurst, Illinois also. The campus is just 4 blocks west and 3 blocks south of the station downtown.
3. Does the program provide transportation? The program does not currently have the resources to provide transportation. We do make every effort to link students and parents with other participants who live in their area, whenever possible.
4. What are the program dates? The program year begins in October. Registration for all workshops begins promptly on each monthly date at 9:30 A.M. Seminars run from 10:00 A.M. until 3:30 P.M. This year's final program activity is in April.
5. What is the cost of the workshops and may I invite neighbors, relatives and friends? Alpha Lite workshops are free. Lunch is provided for students. Parents, guardians and other adult guests may purchase a lunch for $ 7.00. Yes, you may invite others to participate. They must complete an application for membership. Individual guests may attend a single workshop, but notification must be provided to the Registration Coordinator, no later than Wednesday Evening of the week of a given seminar. We encourage and are pleased to receive referrals from past and current Alpha Lite participants and parents.
6. Is it too late to register? No, it is never too late to register. Registration is open and students will not be turned away if they do not register for the first workshop. Registration requires completion of the official application with permission from parents being provided. Incomplete and illegible applications will not be accepted. Registration for each workshop begins at 9:30 A.M. at each month's workshop. Seminars begin promptly at 10:00 A.M. Plan to arrive early at the Elmhurst campus, since parking space is limited in both north and south lots. |
